Evidence Of Acid Damage To Custom Framed Art

: The browning effect in this watercolor of a sailboat shows clear evidence of damage from acid mats and acid backing.

This original watercolor was brought in for reframing. When it was removed from the frame and separated from the mats, it revealed evidence of acid damage. The outline of the mats is clearly evident by the browning that has occurred.. This clearly indicates the areas where paper mat boards touched the art. There is also evidence of acid damage from the backing material. Browning is occurring in the clouds and in the white sail. This is a result of acid contamination from the paper fibers breaking down and leaching acid into the art. This damage is permanent and irreversible. This damage could’ve been avoided by using conservation grade/acid-free mats and foamboard when the framer originally placed the art into the frame.
