This is an example of a framed original US Army Recruiting poster. This poster is titled, “Rock Of The Marne”. It is part of the Department of the Army, U.S. Army In Action recruiting posters series, circa 1953. This example of the Rock of The Marne is based on the German Army’s last great attack during WWI near Mézy, France as the Germans stuck along the Marne River. The area was defended by the 30th and 37th U.S. Army infantry regiments of the 3rd Infantry Division (3rd ID). The U.S. Army was attacked on three sides, but pushed the German Army back across the Marne River. The American commander, General (Black Jack) Pershing called it, “. . . . “one of the most brilliant pages of our military annals.” Because the 3rd ID held steadfast in the face of the enemy, they earned the nickname “Rock of the Marne.” This copy of the poster is framed with a blue and white 3rd ID patch and a subdued 3rd ID patch. The patches flank the drop down box beneath the image. Inside the dropdown box is the history behind the poster. The other elements of the frame design include double acid free mats. The top mat is an off green and it matches the foliage colors in the poster. The bottom mat is an off gray that matches the soil and the fog. Surrounding the poster and the objects is our signature open V-groove. The recruiting poster was mounted on acid-free reversible foamboard. This mounting technique eliminates wrinkles and maintains the ability to remove the poster later, if required. This original Rock of The Marne poster was framed using a premium wood profile with a rustic bark appearance.
