Don Troiani has accurately depicted the Union Signaling station located on the roof of the Cheves’ Rice Mill, across the Ogeechee River from Fort McAllister. The painting presents Major General Sherman and Brigadier General Howard studying a map in final preparations for the land attack on Fort McAllister, the last major battle of the Savannah Campaign. For Sherman to advance on Savannah, he needed to capture Fort McAllister in order to resupply his troops. In Don Troiani’s depicted scene, Sherman has directed that Captain McClintock, his Signal Officer, order General Hazen to commence the land assault on the Confederate Fort. This scene and the attack on Fort McAllister hold great historical significance for Bryan County, GA. We have framed this limited edition print by Don Troiani in a number of ways.
